Project MAEAR (High Resistant Special Materials) aims research of new lightweight materials with great capacity of high velocity impact absorption. The motivation for this work is the constant demand of highly efficient lightweight ballistic protection systems which would not interfere in maneuver and fuel autonomy of aircraft neither in users comfort and mobility in the case of body armours.

MAEAR is a 3 years length project that has begun in June 2012 being sponsored by FINEP. This project is inserted in the research area called MARIMBA (Ballistic Impact Resistant Materials), which is carried out in the Materials Division (AMR) of IAE. This area has been active since 2005 and two major previous projects were already concluded. Both were related to the development of armour panels for aircraft, development of ceramic plates for ballistic protection and nationalization of raw materials.

The current research includes materials such opaque and transparent vitroceramics, ceramics thin plates and particles and polymeric fibres textiles. These materials are formulated, modified, processed and combined with the goal of developing shielding structures with better performance/weight relation compared to the commercial available products.
